Eastman Lodge Gets A New Roof And A New Look

Another great summer has passed at Camp Eastman, but that has not stopped many dedicated volunteers from working on Eastman Lodge. The building was officially closed to scouts at the end of August and since then work has continued in the kitchen, the bathroom, and on the roof. The roof portion of the building, a joint effort between CEDA and the Mississippi Valley Council, was a major endeavor. The project was conceived and the labor organized by CEDA, while the Council funded most of the roof materials. In addition, Jerry Bessine with Penn City Sheet Metal was contracted to furnish and install the sheet metal and flashing. The estimated total for the project was $11,000.00, but with nearly all volunteer work and some donated materials, the job was completed at about half of that cost.
The Eastman Lodge building defines Camp Eastman, and therefore demanded quality materials – a 50-year designer asphalt shingle was selected. These shingles are very attractive and nearly match the color of the original slate shingles used on the roof. The quality shingles also insure that none of the volunteers that worked on the roof will ever have to work on it again.

The project took nine days to complete, and was spread over five weekends. While the work was hard, and at times the volunteers scant, the work was made much easier by the camaraderie of the workers. The volunteers all brought their enthusiasm and various levels of skill to the project. While the more experienced workers nailed shingles and worked tight corners, the less skilled laborers assumed the role of shingle-strippers and shingle-monkeys (in other words “grunt work”). The combined efforts of all involved have insured that current Scouts and Scouters will have a “roof over their heads” for years to come.
Although the roof on Eastman Lodge is now complete, CEDA will be working all winter and in the years to come to make Camp Eastman a better place. We are always looking for volunteers to help on our projects, or to plan a project of their own. Please consider volunteering your time to future projects at Camp Eastman.
