Staff Area Tent Cabins Get a Face-Lift
In 1992 Ron Keller, with
significant assistance from his
wife Mary, oversaw the design
and construction of 12 tent
cabin frames to be used in the
staff area of Camp Eastman.
These cabins were built to
temporarily meet the needs of
staff housing until a more permanent
solution could be
found, and were designed to be
taken apart and stored indoors
during the off-season. Funding
for the cabins was obtained by
private donations, and the donors
were recognized with
brass plates mounted on the
front of the cabins. |

That today, 18 years later, those “temporary” tent cabins are still in use is a testament to Ron’s quality
construction and the efforts of many to replace screens, doors, and affect other minor repairs. Unfortunately,
time, the elements, and a lack of routine maintenance have left many of the frames in less than
acceptable condition.
Earlier this year, Bill Ell and Bill Dorrell approached CEDA to request funding for repairs to the
cabin frames, as part of a more extensive project to realize significant improvements to the staff area.
Repairs included extending the concrete slabs on which the frames rest, replacement of deteriorated
wood, new paint and new screen. The CEDA Board of Directors approved funding for the initial phases
of the project. |
The concrete extensions were
poured at the same time as the
Vending Center foundation. In
May, Bill’s Ell and Dorrell, along
with Steve Baker (who has led
many of the previous repair projects
on the frames), and others
began the repair work on the cabins.
Additionally, CEDA funded
the construction of a new frame
to replace one lost in a fire several
years ago. Ron Keller, assisted
by his son Mickey and
Brad Buckley, constructed the
new cabin frame, and it was delivered
to camp in early June.
Several of the cabins have
now been completely refurbished,
and work will continue
after the summer camp sessions
until all of |
