Another camp icon, the fire bell, gets a face-lift, part two. (Click here to see part one)

After being sandblasted and powder coated (twice), the new-looking bell made an appearance at the 2007 CEDA banquet and auction, where it was rung with much enthusiasm throughout the evening. It was then transported to camp to await its return to the front of Eastman Lodge.

Kevin Mineart works on removing the old post

During the summer, the old bell post was removed and the concrete pad was readied for the new mount by grinding off the remaining steel and drilling bolt holes. The new post was bolted into the concrete pad and bears a compass rose at the base to help new those new to Camp Eastman get their bearings.

The bell is raised onto its new frame

In January of 2008, on a day that was almost as cold as the day it was removed, the lower half of the bell frame was installed, and the refurbished bell was again raised by CEDA’s JLG lift and repositioned on its new base.

This project has been made possible by generous donations of labor and materials from both Modern Welding and Flint Cliff Manufacturing, as well as several hours of volunteer work by friends of Camp Eastman, and is a shining example of how CEDA works to pair it’s funding of projects with generously donated or discounted labor and materials.
