BOATHOUSE COMPLETED IN 1997
With winter weather quickly approaching, the Camp Eastman Development Association completed another major facilities improvement at the boating area in 1997. Plans for a new 30' x 40' all steel boathouse, announced by the board in the spring issue of the newsletter, have become a reality.
Planning for the project began shortly after the 1997 Winter Banquet with the study of plans and collection of construction estimates. By March, the project was progressing well, and for a short time, construction seemed possible before the 1997 summer camp season. In May, after a critical look at the boating area projects that were already planned or underway, the board decided to order the materials for the building, but to delay construction until after camp. According to President Jim Gray, "We just had too many planned projects to complete. There was simply not enough time to construct the boathouse too."
The steel fabrication order was completed in late August, and September 13th was set as the date to begin groundwork. In conjunction with the Silver Tomahawk Lodge Fall Conclave, the first steps were taken to prepare the site for a new building. Cutting of trees and removal of stumps were the first items to be accomplished. (Continued on page 2)
The board of directors gratefully acknowledges the contributions of the many members and friends of our organization who worked diligently to see this project completed in 1997. Because of your financial support, the association was able to pay for all materials as the building was being constructed. The valuation of the completed project is estimated at $15,000.00.

THIRD ANNUAL BANQUET AND AUCTION
It is once again time for Scouts, Scouters and friends of Camp Eastman to gather for the Third Annual Banquet & Auction. Since we met last February, the Camp Eastman Development Association has accomplished a great deal to improve and preserve Camp Eastman. Many of the Scouts that attended camp in 1997 enjoyed improvements and opportunities that were the direct result of those who generously supported our last banquet. Your continued support will make many more projects become a reality at camp this summer. All who share the goal of preserving and improving Camp Eastman are invited to attend.
The banquet this year will be held in the same location, St. Mary's Parish Center in Fort Madison. Greg Humphrey has generously donated the rental fee for this fine facility. Mike Sullivan certainly doesn't mind cooking for some additional guests this year, so lets see if we can fill the hall. Mike promises an outstanding dinner with all the trimmings for only $8.00! Reservations are recommended, but you are welcome without them. You can also purchase a ticket to the banquet this year by contacting any Camp Eastman Development Association board member.
For those who braved the snow last year to attend the banquet, you will be pleased to note the date this year is April 4th.
President Jim Gray will deliver the annual report of the Camp Eastman Development Association and preview many of the projects which are currently under study by the board of directors. Special recognition will be given to those who have made significant contributions to the association during the past year. The first recipients of the Camp Eastman Youth Service Award will be announced and recognized.
Colonel Randy Foor will again cry the fund raising auction. Remember, the funds raised by the auction will be used to make Camp Eastman improvements for the 1998 camp season. Bring your checkbook, there are lots of unique items included in the auction this year.

WHY THE NAME CHANGE?
The Board of Directors of the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk Alumni, Inc. took final action at their November 2, 1997 meeting to change the name of the organization. The change, which had been under discussion by the board for the past three months, became official with the selection of "Camp Eastman Development Association" as the new name. In further action, the board approved a new emblem design for the organization as well as naming its official newsletter publication, "The Paddlewheel." Use of the name Camp Eastman Development Association will begin immediately and will be phased in on all documents, publications and insignia as soon as it is practical.
Why a name change? The Board of Directors stated it best, "To eliminate confusion and to have our name reflect our purpose." When the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk Alumni, Inc. was organized in September of 1995, it was committed to a dual purpose; 1. To build and develop Camp Eastman. 2. To preserve the customs and traditions of the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk, Lodge #80, W.W.W.
With the return of an Order of the Arrow charter to Silver Tomahawk Lodge in 1997, the board was able to shift the majority of its focus to the development of Camp Eastman. The Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk Alumni, Inc. has been pleased to play a key role in the return of the Lodge as well as preserving the customs and traditions of the Tribe during the interim period when Silver Tomahawk Lodge was merged out of existence. The board of the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk Alumni, Inc. believes the primary responsibility for preservation of the customs and traditions of the Tribe should be returned to the administration of the present Silver Tomahawk Lodge #80. One of the traditions of Camp Eastman has been the commitment of Silver Tomahawk Lodge #80 to provide service to our "heart's reservation." The Camp Eastman Development Association looks forward to the continued support of Lodge members as a way of keeping and expanding this commitment.Cooperation between the two organizations can be a dynamic force for the improvement of Camp Eastman in the years to come.
The Camp Eastman Development Association has continued to expand contact with those who are interested in developing and maintaining camp. The recently completed boathouse project is an example of the many individuals and companies that are willing to help.
SPORTS AREA IMPROVEMENTS
A new boathouse was not the only contribution the Camp Eastman Development Association made to Camp Eastman this year. The area west of the trading post saw some heavy use this summer due to improvements funded by our organization. CEDA members made the construction, transportation and installation of a set of new soccer goals possible by donations of time, materials, and money.
Other equipment, including soccer balls and nets, was also donated. To purchase the soccer equipment commercially would have cost the council over $1,000.
